Safe cycling freedom for all!
At the Flemish Road Safety Congress on 18 March, our trainers Lotte and Hannelore were our guests to introduce De Fietsschool. With De Fietsschool, we move heaven and earth to combat mobility poverty by giving cycling lessons to children, young people and adults who have a bicycle arrears. Especially people who are new to Belgium and have little experience with the traffic rules are thus given the chance to learn to cycle safely and independently.
Combine practice and theory
We combine practical exercises with theoretical lessons on the Highway Code. Extra attention is paid to non-native speakers through visual and interactive methods. Through simple language and recognisable associations - such as 'Who may go first? Who has to wait?' - complex traffic rules are made understandable. There are also educational short films explaining the most important situations on the road.
Besides theory and videos, De Fietsschool also offers practical training courses, such as traffic education walks and bicycle tours. These involve practising not only on a traffic-free terrain, but also in real traffic. Participants are guided step by step, and successes are celebrated to boost self-confidence.

Cycling changes lives, and so does working together!
Thanks to partnerships with schools, community organisations and governments, De Fietsschool ensures a sustainable approach. Cycling not only offers freedom and autonomy, but also contributes to better integration, health and self-confidence. The message is clear: cycling changes lives, and everyone should have the opportunity to get on the road safely.

Also in other cities, towns and schools
De Fietsschool supports municipalities and other organisations that want to offer cycling lessons to vulnerable people with a cycling disadvantage. They can use information, inspiration and all kinds of teaching materials on De Fietsschool's online knowledge base to roll out the Fietsschool approach locally, in their neighbourhood.
