Our offer
There is a lot involved in starting up or expanding a local cycling initiative. As the initiator of such an initiative, it can be quite overwhelming. With years of experience and expertise in cycling education, De Fietsschool can guide, support and relieve your municipality.
1. Training for cycling instructors
In our training for cycling instructors, your Volunteers will learn step by step how to get someone with no cycling experience on the pedals anyway. Besides general Cycling Skills, we also cover the highway code and cycling in traffic.
We train your volunteers to teach participants how to cycle in a high-quality manner .
After the training, we provide room for exchange about their experiences during the cycling lessons.
2. Cycling classes in your municipality
A cycling instructor from De Fietsschool will come to your community to deliver cycling lessons together with your Volunteers.
Get ready for nice group dynamics, clear communication with non-native speakers, explanation of the highway code in plain language, well-guided practice opportunities on the street and learning with impact!
At the first cycle lessons in your municipality, we also always organise the training for cycle instructors
3. Member of the De Fietsschool network - Cycling School
If you book a training course for cycling instructors or cycling classes in your municipality, you will automatically become a member of the 2026 De Fietsschool - Cycling School network free of charge. Without training or cycling lessons, you pay €975 for 1 year's membership.
- We give you access to our Knowledge Base, full of useful guides, templates and checklists.
- We provide advice for the start-up and organisation of your local cycling offer. Just think about communication, administration, teaching materials, Volunteers, planning, logistics, evaluation, ... .
- We connect you with other partners in our network so you can learn from others.
- You get the latest cycle school news in your mailbox and can participate in webinars.
- We literally put your cycling offer on the map, and help you measure and share the impact of your initiative.
- You can publish your lessons in our cycling lesson calendar and you can use our participant registration module .
Our approach
There is a lot involved in building a local cycling initiative. The context is different in every municipality. That is why we like to work on a tailor-made basis.
In an intake meeting, we draw up a situation sketch. We discuss the goals and needs of your city or municipality. We look at which solutions will help you on your way and develop a feasible plan together.
You become a member of the De Fietsschool network and gain access to the Knowledge Base and our digital platform.

Why start a local cycling school?
Flanders has a target of 30% of all travel in Flanders being done by bicycle by 2040. If we want to reach that target together, we need to make sure everyone can cycle. By teaching people to cycle, you not only stimulate active and sustainable travel in your municipality. Being able to cycle also lowers the threshold to work, to education, to leisure activities. Moreover, cycling is healthy, fun and social.
Many people want to cycle, but have never learned or experience barriers to cycling. De Fietsschool helps you to get those people, too, cycling safely and smoothly in their own neighbourhood.

In collaboration with the city's sports department and a network of enthusiastic Volunteers, we taught more than 100 adults and children to cycle in Ostend between 2023 and 2025.
