Training for cycling instructors
Teaching cycling is not core physics. Nevertheless, it is important that instructors have sufficient feeling, pedagogical insight and knowledge of the highway code to guide participants with no cycling experience in the best possible way. You will learn how to do all this and how to take your cycling lessons to the next level in our training for cycling instructors.
The programme
To upskill volunteers or prepare them for their first cycling lesson, De Fietsschool offers an active and interactive training course for cycling instructors. The training is an added value for both novice instructors and instructors with experience.
In this training you will learn step by step how to teach someone who has never cycled before. Moreover, our trainers pay special attention to communication with non-native speakers.
This training consists of three parts and zooms in on general cycling skills, the highway code and cycling in traffic.
A trainer from De Fietsschool comes to your community to give the training course.
Part 1: Learning to ride a bike for adults
Learning to cycle takes practice, even for adults. In this first practical part of the training, you will learn how to make participants bicycle proficient : finding balance, learning to pedal, riding straight, turning, bike control, ... .
For each skill participants need to master, we provide you with different exercises . We teach you how to work in a way that is tailor-made for each participant, how to give direction to the learning process and how to do all this in a way that is also understandable for people who do not yet master the Dutch language.

Part 2: The highway code
Traffic rules in Flanders are complex. Especially for people who do not yet have a good command of the Dutch language, the highway code is a legislative maze. That is why we teach you how to explain traffic rules and road signs in an accessible way to less-speaking participants.

Part 3: Cycling in traffic
To really learn to ride a bike and become an independent cyclist, it is essential that participants also practise in traffic. This too does not happen overnight. Traffic sometimes poses a barrier and brings new challenges.
In this part of the training, you will learn how to guide novice cyclists on the street and how to make every bike ride on the street a learning moment. Together, we think about how we can also guide each participant on the street in a tailor-made way, whatever barriers the participant experiences. In this part of the training we also pay attention to how best to guide non-native participants.

"The session not only highlighted the practical side of cycling lessons, but also constituted a lesson in empathy. We put ourselves in the shoes of novice cyclists and learned from that perspective how best to guide participants."
