Cycling lessons for non-Dutch speakers

Cycling is key to mobility and integration.

For people who do not speak Dutch, cycling is often not straight-forward, for example because they never learned to ride a bike in their home country. This is a pity, because cycling promotes social integration and gives people access to work, education and leisure activities. To help non-native speakers, De Fietsschool offers classes that combine cycling and language skills.

Our approach

In our cycling lessons for non-native speakers, we use an approach that combines learning to cycle with practising the Dutch language.

  • We teach in simple Dutch, supported by images.
  • We focus on practical situations and cycling in real-life traffic.
  • We provide training by experienced instructors.
  • We collaborate with language centres, NT2 courses and organisations working on integration.

This unique approach ensures that participants learn to ride a bike, while also refining their knowledge of the Dutch language.

"For new residents, the bicycle is not only a functional means of transport, but also a symbol of freedom, independence and self-confidence. That feeling is worth its weight in gold, proving that cycling does indeed change lives."
