Cycling Buddies
Pair participants who could use some extra practice even after the lesson series with a cycling friend, or cycling buddy. He or she gives those participants a boost.
For participants who at the end of the lesson series still cannot cycle entirely independently, it pays to set up a system that allows them to practice a little more under supervision.
So set up a buddy system, pairing each participant who still needs some practice with a trainer or a volunteer. That facilitator will go out one-on-one with the participant, to practice together after the lesson series. This way, the participant gets a push and still grows into an independent cyclist.
Tip: The facilitator makes his or her own arrangements with his or her cycling buddy, e.g. using an appointment card.
Tip: Provide a bike for participants who do not have their own bike after the class series. Also make sure participants and volunteers are insured.
Tip: For participants who have not yet mastered Dutch, such a buddy work also helps to boost their language skills. Want to know more? Then check out the presentation on Bicycle Friends, a language-stimulating buddy project set up with support from the province of Flemish Brabant.
