Leuven cyclists successfully complete lesson series
In Leuven, ten adults with little or no cycling experience successfully completed their cycling lessons. During the final lesson, they received a cycling report from Lothe Ramakers, Leuven alderman for Diversity and Equal Opportunities.
A hesitant start
A new series of cycling classes for adults started in Leuven on 10 March. Most participants had never cycled before. Others especially wanted to gain more traffic experience. With a bit of nerves and a lot of enthusiasm, they started the first exercises: walking with the bike, pedalling, stepping...
Already by the end of the first lesson, some managed to keep their balance with their feet on the pedals. Yes, pedalling away!
15 lessons later
In the lessons that followed, De Fietsschool's instructors prepared the participants step by step for their first ride in real traffic. For some this went more smoothly than for others, but everyone made progress.
After 15 lessons, 10 participants are now cycling smoothly and confidently through traffic. During the last lesson, they proudly received their cycling report from Lothe Ramakers, Leuven alderman for Diversity and Equal Opportunities.
And after that?
Even after the lessons, we continue to support the participants. A week after the last lesson, for instance, they met again, this time for a practical lesson on bicycle repair. Participants observed and learned how to carry out small basic repairs on a bicycle.
Because, as one participant nicely put it, "By just trying it once, I might dare to repair my bike myself in the future."
But what good is bike repair knowledge if you don't have a bike? De Fietsschool helps with that too. Participants without their own bicycle are temporarily provided with one. This way, we make sure they can keep practising even after the lessons, and their new skills are not lost.
