De Fietsschool Ghent in the spotlight and in the media
The cycling season is also off to a good start in Ghent, with extra attention this weekend in the media. The city opened a brand new Fietsschool on Koopvaardijlaan in the Muide-Meulestede district. At this new location, Ghent wants to give even more adults and children the chance to learn to ride a bike.
Demand is high: about 250 people from Ghent are currently on the waiting list. Thanks to the new course - including a seesaw and practice zone for tram tracks - students can now practice their cycling skills in complete safety. Even the bicycle taxi for less mobile residents was given a place there.
Marathon runner Bashir Abdi also came with his children to take a look at the opening. In the coming years, De Fietsschool will be rolled out further as a pilot project, alongside the familiar lessons in Ghent's neighbourhoods.
As alderman Joris Vandenbroucke puts it nicely: "Everyone should get the chance to learn to ride a bike. It is a lever against transport poverty and simply fun and healthy."
