City of Leuven organises cycling lessons for primary school children
Together with De Fietsschool, the City of Leuven recently started organising cycling lessons for primary school children. Under the name "Fietsschool XS". Thanks to this collaboration, young beginners get the chance to learn to cycle smoothly and safely in four lessons. Other towns, municipalities and schools can also get started with the low-threshold approach of Fietsschool XS.
Cycling lessons for kids in Leuven
De Fietsschool has been organising cycling lessons for adults for years. Recently, Leuven has also been running a series of lessons for primary school children. After all, there are a lot of children in the city who cannot cycle, or cannot cycle well. This limits their freedom of movement.
With "Cycling School XS", De Fietsschool and the city of Leuven want to change this. To this end, they are jointly organising a series of lessons for children without cycling experience. The series consists of 4 easily accessible cycling lessons, taking place after school on Wednesday afternoons. The children do not need to bring their own bikes. These will be provided.

Happy faces for both child and parent
The first lesson at Leuven's Blauwputplein was already a success. The children became familiar with their bikes, and already made their first attempt at moving the pedals. This produced many happy faces.
The parents too, by the way. De Fietsschool XS invites them to the lessons to support their child's learning process. Experience shows that children learn cycling faster when parents assist them. Practising together also makes the learning process more sociable.
Moreover, parents also gain the necessary knowledge to continue practising with their child at home.

Also in other cities, towns and schools
Fietsschool XS supports municipalities and other organisations wishing to offer cycling lessons to children with cycling disadvantages. They can use information, inspiration and all kinds of teaching materials on De Fietsschool's online knowledge base to roll out the Fietsschool XS approach locally, in their neighbourhood.
