Case: De Fietsschool x Decathlon - Together in the saddle for bicycle reuse and new opportunities
In 2023, De Fietsschool and Decathlon joined forces for a double purpose: helping people get back on their bikes and giving bikes a second life. What followed was a successful initiative that linked sustainability to social mobility.
ReCYCLE: bikes with a past, give future
Through its ReCYCLE programme, Decathlon called on customers to hand in their old or unused bikes. They were refurbished and resold as high-quality second-hand bikes, with guarantee. This way, every steel steed was given a new lease of life - and people with a smaller budget could still easily get on the road.
🚴♀️Fietsinitiatie for adults
At ten car parks of Decathlon shops, De Fietsschool organised free cycling initiation for adults who had never learned to ride a bike before. Participants learned about balance, steering and pedalling in a low-threshold manner, under the guidance of experienced instructors
.🤝 A partnership with impactThe
cooperation between De Fietsschool and Decathlon showed how retail and social commitment can reinforce each other. Participants found more freedom and self-confidence, bikes were recovered, and shops provided the backdrop for meeting and learning.📍 Locations
The cycling classes took place in Anderlecht, Ghent, Evere, Hasselt and Antwerp, among others. In each shop, local staff and volunteers worked together to ensure the initiations ran smoothly.
What lingers
Although the project has since been completed, the impact lives on. Decathlon remains committed to circular economy and second-hand sales. De Fietsschool continues to build a network of accessible cycling classes, with this collaboration as an inspiring example of how it can be done.
