Fietsschool XS: Cycling lessons for children from 6 to 12 years old
Under the name Fietsschool XS, De Fietsschool organises low-threshold cycling lessons for children. The lessons focus on children aged between 6 and 12 who cannot yet keep their balance on a bicycle with two wheels. We actively involve parents in our lessons. This gives them tools to continue practising at home.
What is Fietsschool XS?
Fietsschool XS teaches children aged 6 to 12 without cycling experience to cycle smoothly and safely. The focus is on:
- Cycling lessons for children, always tailored to their age and cycling level
- Involvement of parents, so they can support their child in the learning process
- Collaboration with schools and community operations, to refer children with cycling disadvantages to the classes
The ultimate goal? To turn children into stable cyclists, ready to continue practising cycling at school or with their parents!

Practical
Training for teachers
Experienced cycling coaches from De Fietsschool train teachers to become cycling instructors. During that training, they learn:
- Techniques for teaching children to cycle.
- Dealing with different levels of cycling
- How to guide groups of novice cyclists in traffic
- How to teach and apply traffic rules in clear and simple language
Training for parents at your school
Parents learn how to teach their child how to cycle themselves. A practical session is followed by a more theoretical part that gives insights into a child's development and how that translates into a traffic environment. And we refresh the traffic rules.
Info moment for parents
The information event Cycling together with your child, how do you do that? focuses on guiding your child in a traffic environment, for which it is important that parents gain insight into a child's development and how they can deal with it on the road.
Tailored support
Our experts offer guidance in starting and organising cycling lessons and cycling activities. We help with logistical challenges, such as providing children's bikes and safe practice locations. We show how to bring parents into the story on the one hand by involving them in cycling lessons.

Approach within school walls
De Fietsschool XS helps schools organise cycling lessons for children. And to offer cycling skills as a regular part of the curriculum. Because extra practice moments and cycling activities, even after the lesson series, make all the difference.
Interested in cycling lessons for children?
De Fietsschool developed a collaboration between the municipality, schools and local cycling ambassadors that allows cycling lessons to be organised for primary school pupils.
We would be happy to explain this approach in a no-obligation meeting.
Also for municipalities and other organisations
De Fietsschool XS also supports municipalities and other organisations that want to offer cycling lessons to children with cycling disadvantages. Together, we identify needs and opportunities.
Collaboration is key to success
Experiences of Fietsschool XS in Leuven show that cooperation is essential to tackle the cycling disadvantage among children. With targeted outreach through schools and community work, accessible cycling lessons and support from parents, we create a generation that can cycle independently and confidently. De Fietsschool calls on schools, community organisations, parents and local authorities to help build that future.
