Learning to ride a bike as an adult? That is perfectly possible! On this page, you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our cycling lessons. Whether you have never been on a bike before or want to brush up on your cycling technique - we are happy to get you started.

Can I still learn to ride a bike as an adult?


Yes, absolutely! Every year, hundreds of adults learn to ride a bike through De Fietsschool. Our approach is low-threshold, safe and tailored to your pace. Even without any experience, you will learn the basics in a short time.

Where can I take cycling lessons in Flanders or Brussels?


We run cycling classes in dozens of cities and municipalities. You can find out whether there are lessons via your municipality, CPAS, community work or integration service. Sometimes you can also register directly via our website.

Do I need a bicycle to learn to ride at De Fietsschool?

No.

We provide an adapted teaching bike. There are bikes in different sizes so that everyone can start off safely.

How much do cycling lessons cost?

The cost of cycling lessons varies by municipality. In most municipalities, you pay between €10 and €60 for all lessons. If you have an out pass with chance rate, you often get another discount.

You pay before the lessons start or in the first lesson. How you pay varies per municipality. Sometimes you pay by bank transfer, sometimes you pay cash. You will get this information when you register.

Do I need to take out my own insurance?

No. The municipality provides insurance for participants. But beware: the insurance does not pay for everything. If something happens, you need to keep all your doctor's papers up to date.

Should I wear a helmet?

Yes. During cycling lessons, you must wear a helmet. You can use a helmet from the Fietsschool.

How many lessons should I take?

A cycling lesson series usually consists of 15 lessons. It is important that you come to as many lessons as possible so that you can practice properly.

In the first lessons, you learn to cycle calmly in a safe place without cars. You do this step by step. We help you find your balance, learn to turn, take off, stop, ... . If all that goes well, you will start cycling in a quiet street with a guide. If that goes well, you'll start cycling in busier streets.

You will also learn about traffic rules.

What if I can't come?

If you cannot come to a class, it is no problem. However, it is important to let the teacher know. Try to be present as much as possible. Then you can learn to ride your bike safely on the street.

What attire should I wear?

It is best to wear easy or sporty clothes. It is useful to wear long trousers. Do not put on shoes with heels. Do not put on shoes with a slippery sole either, as you will easily slip off the pedals.

If it is cold, be sure to put on gloves. Your hands on the handlebars of the bike get cold quickly.

Should I bring anything else?

A bottle of water is always a good idea. Cycling is exercise, it makes you thirsty.

Will classes continue if it rains?

Yes, normally. Only if there is a lot of wind or if it snows will the lesson be cancelled.

If the lesson is cancelled, you will be notified by the teacher.

Can anyone take cycling lessons?

Yes.

Everyone is welcome and everyone can learn to ride a bike. At De Fietsschool, children, young people, adults learn to ride a bike.

Do you need to be in good shape to learn to ride a bike?

No. Anyone can learn to ride a bike. Learning to cycle is even good for your health. Many people who learn to cycle say they feel better.

Can I take lessons in my own language?


Our trainers speak Dutch, but take non-native speakers into account. We work with simple explanations, visual support and lots of practice. In some cities, there are also multilingual assistants or volunteers.

Are there also classes for children or families?
