Cycling lessons for OKAN pupils
Learning to ride a bicycle is a crucial step towards independence and integration.
Many young people in Onthaalklassen voor Anderstalige Nieuwkomers (OKAN) have never cycled before. Our cycling classes ensure that they get into the saddle smoothly and safely, enabling them to fully participate in society.
Why cycling lessons for OKAN pupils?
Cycling is not only a convenient way to get around, it is also a key to freedom and participation in social life. But what if you never learned how to ride a bike as a kid? Many OKAN pupils hail from countries where cycling is not common, simple or straight-forward. Our lessons therefore help them to:
- learn how to ride a bike, safely and independently
- master the basics of Belgian traffic rules
- integrate more easily and participate fully in school and leisure activities

What can pupils expect?
- They focus on balance, bike control and safe cycling in traffic.
- They are taught by cheerful instructors who have experience with non-Dutch-speaking youngsters.
- They enjoy a nice group feeling together.
- They can use a bicycle and helmet from De Fietsschool during the lessons.
"If you can't cycle in Belgium, you don't really belong. That's a pity. This is why we offer cycling lessons to our OKAN students."
What does a lesson series look like?
Our cycling lessons are low-threshold, hands-on and adapted to the pupils' experience level. A standard lesson series consists of 8 guided lessons, usually at or near the school. A lesson series can, but does not have to, include a bicycle ride in traffic. Likewise, if required, cycling certificates can also be handed out at the end of the lesson series.
