Training for cycling instructors
Teaching cycling is not core physics. Nevertheless, it is important that instructors and volunteers have sufficient feeling, pedagogical insight and knowledge of the highway code to guide participants with no cycling experience. You will learn how to do all this and how to take your cycling lessons to the next level in 'Train-The-Trainer', our training for cycling instructors.
Good teacher, good lessons
To retrain or prepare instructors and volunteers for their first cycling lesson, De Fietsschool - Cycling School offers an interactive training course for cycling instructors.
In this training course, you will learn step by step how to teach someone who has never cycled before how to ride a bike. The training consists of three parts and zooms in on general Cycling Skills, the Highway Code and cycling in traffic. Our trainers pay special attention to communication with non-native speakers. An added value for novice trainers and those with experience.
Part 1: Learning to ride a bike
Learning to cycle takes practice, even for adults. In the first part of the training, you will learn how to make participants bicycle proficient : finding balance, learning to pedal, riding straight, turning, ... .
For each skill participants need to master, we provide you with different exercises .
We teach you how to tailor the training to each participant and how to keep the learning process accessible and give it direction.
Part 2: The highway code
Traffic rules in Flanders are complex. Especially for people who do not yet have a good command of the Dutch language, the highway code is a legislative maze.
That is why we teach you how to explain traffic rules and road signs in an accessible way to less-speaking participants.
Part of standard offer
Our training for Volunteers is part of our standard offering for local cycling initiatives. After all, well-trained Volunteers are only one part of the puzzle. We always help you, as a leader or initiator, to put the whole puzzle together. This is how we ensure a successful cycling initiative, with measurable impact for your participants.
Part 3: Cycling in traffic
To become an independent cyclist, it is essential that participants also practise in traffic. Busy streets sometimes pose thresholds and bring new challenges.
In this part of the training, you will learn how to guide novice cyclists on the street, how to deal with those thresholds and challenges, and how to make every bike ride on the street a learning moment.
"The session not only highlighted the practical side of cycling lessons, but also constituted a lesson in empathy. We put ourselves in the shoes of novice cyclists and learned from that perspective how best to guide participants."
